Do you have diabetes? Then it’s important to take care of your mouth. Those diagnosed with diabetes are at a higher risk for mouth infections, including gum disease, dry mouth, and oral thrush.

There is a strong link between gum disease and diabetes. Gum disease can damage both your gums and jawbone and lead to painful chewing problems and even tooth loss. It also affects how well you can control your blood sugar, which can be particularly problematic for those with diabetes.

Diabetes can also create a condition called dry mouth, which happens when your salivary glands fail to produce enough saliva to wet your mouth. Saliva contains natural cleansing and nourishing minerals which greatly aid in tooth health. A lack of saliva can result in tooth decay.

The increase in glucose levels can bring more sugar into your saliva, which can in turn spread throughout your mouth and cancel out saliva’s naturally beneficial effects.

Dry mouth can also lead to a condition called oral thrush, manifested by painful white patches in the mouth.

The good news is that you can prevent all these problems with simple and consistent daily practices. If you work to control your blood glucose levels, brush twice a day, floss once a day and visit the dentist regularly, you will be well on your way to a healthier smile and healthier life.
