As long as you have your natural teeth, which should be for the rest of your life, you need to be on the lookout for tooth decay. Plaque accumulates on everyone’s teeth. That plaque works with the bacteria left over from your food, especially from the sugars and the starches in your meals to create acid. Acid is also present in many of the foods and drinks that you consume. Acid will attack the enamel on your teeth, and will lead to tooth decay.

But tooth decay can be prevented. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day will help. It is also a great idea to brush your teeth 30 minutes after every meal. You should spend at least two minutes brushing, and use a fluoride toothpaste. If you can’t floss after each meal, you should floss once a day, and many people choose to floss just before bed. A healthy, balanced diet will provide your teeth with the vitamins and minerals they need to stay healthy. Treats such as candy, ice cream and cake should be eaten in moderation. If your city fluoridates your water, make sure to drink plenty of it. Not only will the fluoride benefit your teeth, but the water will also keep your mouth hydrated and wash away food debris. You need to see your dentist at least twice a year for your routine cleanings and exams.
